Davao’s Ngilngig Film Festival 2019 is here. It has begun and it is bigger and better than ever. The film festival will run from October 25 until October 29.

Ngilngig an annual film festival based in Davao City. It showcases films that explore the meanings of the “ngilngig.” Ngilngig is a Bisaya expression for something that is “kuyaw” or fantastic. It can also pertain to something that elicits horror or alluding to the macabre.

Festival films and other featured films will be screened at the Cinematheque Centre.

This year’s film festival includes a mix of international and local films, old and new, full length and shorts… all Ngilngig. All fantastic.

The festival opened in October 25 with Throwback Ngilngig, a screening of past Ngilngig movies.

Short Films in Competition

The festival continues with short films in competition by Filipino and Asian filmmakers.

 

Exhibition Films

The festival also features Full-Length Asian Films. These include Mystic Shrine Maiden and Vice from Japan. The Seen and The Unseen by Kamila Andini (Indonesia) will be screened on Monday, October 28. Finally, Dearest Sister by Mattie Do (Laos, France, Estonia) will be screened on Tuesday, October 29.

Ngilngig will also screen films by Filipino Filmmakers. The festival opened with Masla a Papanok (Bird of History) by Gutierrez Mangansakan II. Bamboo Dogs by Khavn and Markado (The Moon Devourer) by Joe Bacus will be screened on Sunday, October 27. MedusAe (New Cut) by Pam Miras will have a Special Screening on Monday, October 28.

The Ngilngig Asian Fantastic Film Festival will also screen two Pinoy Classics. The restored Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes film Magic Temple will be screened on Sunday, October 27. Meanwhile, Chito S Rono’s Pantayin sa Sindak si Barbara will be screened on Monday, October 28.

Closing Program

Finally, A Short History of a Few Bad Things by Keith Deligero will close the festival on Tuesday, October 29.

Closing Day will also feature a Ngilngig Showcase and an Experimental Shorts Exhibition.

Three films will premiere on October 29 at the Cinematheque Davao. These are A Return to Reason by Keisha Therese Halili, (a)wake by Maki Cabrera, and Trabungko by Wowa Medroso.

In the evening Experimental Shorts will be screened at the Closing Party at the Suazo Bar.

Ngilngig Film Festival 2019 is definitely packed with fantastic films that will surely entertain, intrigue, and keep us awake at night. Do not miss it.
